Meet Christian McBride: The Bass Virtuoso at the Heart of the Montclair Jazz Festival
Few musicians in modern jazz command the stage—and the respect of their peers—quite like Christian McBride. A towering presence both musically and culturally, McBride is not only an nine-time GRAMMY® Award-winning bassist but also one of the most influential ambassadors of jazz today. And for the Montclair community, he’s so much more: a neighbor, educator, mentor, and the driving force behind the Montclair Jazz Festival and JAZZ HOUSE KiDS.
From Philadelphia Roots to Global Recognition
Born in Philadelphia, McBride began playing bass at an early age and quickly emerged as a prodigy in the jazz world. By the time he was 17, he had moved to New York City to attend Juilliard, and within a year, he was performing with legends like Freddie Hubbard and Benny Golson.
From there, his career took off—spanning straight-ahead jazz, fusion, funk, R&B, and classical collaborations. His versatility and charisma on stage have made him a first-call bassist for artists ranging from Herbie Hancock to Sting, Pat Metheny, Chick Corea, and even James Brown.
A Band Leader and Storyteller
As a bandleader, Christian McBride has formed several critically acclaimed ensembles, including:
Christian McBride’s New Jawn
Inside Straight
The Christian McBride Big Band (two-time GRAMMY winner)
Christian McBride Trio
Christian McBride’s Ursa Major
He’s also a beloved host and jazz ambassador. His voice can be heard across the nation as the host of NPR’s "Jazz Night in America", where he shines a spotlight on emerging artists and jazz legends alike.
Montclair Roots and a Mission to Educate
Now a longtime Montclair, NJ resident, McBride co-founded JAZZ HOUSE KiDS with his wife, vocalist and arts advocate Melissa Walker. This nationally recognized nonprofit provides year-round music education, mentorship, and performance opportunities to thousands of young musicians—many of whom go on to conservatories and professional careers.
As Artistic Director of the Montclair Jazz Festival, McBride curates a lineup that blends established icons with rising stars, giving audiences a front-row seat to the evolution of jazz. He often performs at the festival himself—bringing together generations of musicians and fans in a vibrant, joyful celebration of the music he loves.
A Legacy Still in Motion
Christian McBride’s accolades are many: GRAMMYs, honorary doctorates, and performances for presidents and world leaders. But perhaps his greatest achievement is his commitment to building community through jazz—especially here in Montclair.
Whether on the stage, in the classroom, or behind the mic, McBride brings energy, empathy, and excellence to everything he touches. And as we celebrate another incredible year of the Montclair Jazz Festival, we honor the legacy—and the future—he continues to shape.
Want to see McBride live? Don’t miss his performance at the 2025 Montclair Jazz Festival on Saturday, September 13 during the Downtown Jamboree. Follow @MontclairJazzFest for updates and artist features.
